suspended belief but engrossing nonetheless

wow. absolutely no words. i HATE. haaaaaaated. the villain in this story. not bc of character development or anything, but bc it was done so well and he was so evil & there was nothing i could do to stop it all from unfolding. many cringes, flinches, heart clutches, groans, jaw drops later, im grateful for the ending.

3: only realized what king was trying to get at with the end of that short story a day later. great storytelling per usual. one thing that’s so fun about reading king is the way he introduces characters and names - it slowly unravels and builds and the name comes later and is never repetitive. very efficient. i love that

updating my progress after each story - how does king think of this shit? jaw dropping, gaping, confirming why i don’t talk to strangers

i’m happy this book is getting me out of my reading slump i’m loving it so much that i’m even reading it while washing the dishes. i feel like that lebron meme “i can’t believe this is my life” because king’s storytelling is so good and addicting. at the same time i’m scared to finish it because i don’t want this feeling to end or change

this was such a strong start I was getting ready to declare 5 stars in the beginning it hooked me in immediately but now it’s so slow I’m begging for the scenery to change and something new to happen rather than 30 pages of dialogue in a row and I also now need to suspend my belief in this imaginary world because of plot holes in the way these people are acting why oh why

The plot is unfolding I fear. The pieces are being put together.

this hit a little different now

I dnf’ed all of the books I picked up this year so far and this might finally be the one I finish!!! Life is too short to sit through a book that isn’t resonating with you at your current stage in life/mood 🧘🏻‍♀️ anyways now it’s nighttime and I have to stop here cause I’m scared

this book actually ruins my mood every time I pick it up. free me from the shackles. this is why I'm usually quick to DNF the first few pages if I don't like a book during my first impression. the plot could have been done in 270 pages! "she felt his love" WHAT all he did was look at you and you guys did nothing together. this book is unconvincing, shallow, and very tell-y and not show-y. oops :/

while this is easy to read, it’s wordy and there are too many details included that don’t do anything for the plot. the narrator is a rich white girl & at a certain point i think it’s okay to stop pointing out every Black person she sees. also, while i love me a good romance, the situation at hand feels downplayed because of the trivial somewhat-romantic encounters she has. just finishing it for my book club.

first impression: kind of wordy and had like 30 adjectives on the first two pages

now: story is flowing nicely with a good pace but she uses lots of war-specific terminology she offers no explanation for
