I think the smut is making the book less good.

Without it, I think this book would be well ahead of the rest of the series.

My main problem with the series continues with this book, the weird fixation on size differences acting as a stand-in for heteronormativity.

Also being annoyed by the fact that Fabian's strongest personality trait is "hates hockey" and that the fact is repeated over and over like the reader will somehow forget.

Otherwise much of the story is an improvement on the earlier books in the series.

The smut to plot ratio really has me wondering just how much they have had to change it to adapt it for TV.

An honest adaptation would have breached broadcast standards.

I had forgotten how problematic this book is, and that the Pathfinder Tales had launched so awkwardly. I think the 2 stars I gave this the first time was pushed up by loyalty to the Pathfinder IP, as the book....

Much further through than I got the first time I tried to read it, back in the pre-Goodreads days I think

Am realising I have definitely read at least part of this before at some point long ago.

Very much enjoying rereading in the hardback, but it is slowed up by middle age having just kicked in and my really needing to update my reading glasses

In the light of revelations about the author in recent years, some offhand panels come off a lot darker and more uncomfortable

I thought I hadn't got this far into the series as a teenager, but I have definitely read this before.

This is just seeming inferior to the previous books in the series. Almost all the characters, especially the women, are very inconsistent with their earlier characterisation,

What the hell is going on in this book? Several characters who used to be passably smart are getting rapidly stupider. Did Robert Jordan realise his best characters were all female and have an attack of misogyny?

Why am I doing this to myself?

So unnecessarily long winded.

I appreciate the world building, but much of it leans into waffling side tangents.

How are these books so popular? The pacing is terrible.

I also don't understand how the best characters are the women, yet so many of the interactions feel like they were written by someone who'd never met a woman.
