“an act of translation is an act of betrayal” — raises questions about who or what we are betraying. should a translator be loyal to the original words, their spirit, or keep the current context in mind? makes me realise i’m not curious enough about etymology; there’s so much history to learn about GAHHH

has been so hard for me to get into fantasy / world-building books but this is really curing my ailment 😩 also there’s a part where they explain how silver-working works, and says “the key to transformation … is not in the material substance. it’s the name.” which i thought was pretty applicable to our lives, even outside of a linguistics lens

gone through 3 short stories, “shoko’s smile” was still the most impactful as it hits quite close to home, especially the parts about pursuing a field in the arts and dreams.

miss austen you make some interesting points and i love the way you word certain ideas but so far i’m still wondering what is the point of this story 😭😭😭 emma’s a very interesting character though, i like the hypocrisy in how she aims to play cupid and sees the need to “fix” and “better” others

mr silvery thank you for letting jeffrey win the game it’s not the main part of the novel but i would’ve cried if the underdog trope didn’t follow through 🥲 love the banter between jeffrey & charlie & eliza, it’s very amusing and genuinely made me laugh at times

ms nosrat’s personal voice is actually so enjoyable to listen to, and i love cooking but there’s so much to rmb 😭😭😭 i love the little diagrams and illustrations hehe

i don’t even like science fiction why did i choose this book 😪 mmm but mr capaldi and mama be giving off weird vibes
