wow. interrupted story is most riveted i’ve been in 9 pages in a very long time if not ever

People who look for reasons to live, as if life alone didn’t justify itself.

I bite. It’s a terrible, voluntary affliction.

rereading reminds me of when i met mona awad at a book reading when she had just released rouge. i drove 3 hours. it was lovely they had special drinks that looked pretty and were disgusting. exactly what i wanted. she read the chapter then had the signings. i was first in line so awad smiled and politely asked my name. i had lost my voice and barely got isabel out. she then looked at me strangely just like a bunny

letter to joseph heller ca. 1977. a letter full of introspection and contemplation in a way i didn’t know babitz even had the capacity for. honestly the entirety of this has been wondering what was deeper and if there was anything deeper to her. this letter gave me an appreciation of her that i had been floundering looking for previously

scathing letter to joan didion. good lord my mouth dropped at the things babitz was saying to didion ABOUT didion

—it’s better to feel like a whore than a fool.

page 117, bennington mention

‘Darling friend, sorry i was such a cunt but i couldn’t resist— I felt so unable to resist cuntdom..’

‘Who can know the heart of youth but youth itself?’

‘When I saw how she was incapable of voicing her true feelings, and how fear and envy contrived to suppress everything about her that was deep and strong, and beautiful- I saw myself’

‘and like all women she forgot things quickly’… that isn’t something i usually hear about women
