read the intro by irvine welsh and decided that was an intro definitely written by a cis white man. but, i am intrigued to read more. my first impressions of the first chapter are that ellis’s writing seems fairly derivative of salingers. the italics (though salingers are more pointed), detail, use of dialogue, etc etc. i’d be interested to know about salingers influence on ellis! otherwise, pretty good so far!

wow. that was such a read. delillo's writing is definitely one of my favourites from all I've read, and white noise is just so--for lack of a better term--carefully written. the narrative choices he makes, the words he uses, everything is just so precise. i really enjoyed it.

the afterword rlly helped point to the complexity of dune and the dedication frank herbert put in. without it, i’d have just seen it as a long ass piece of sci fi fantasy. what’s super interesting is the poetry included within the book itself, it’s approach to religion, and herbert’s creative process that often involved him starting his writing from poems! which is super cool

Finished. very existentialist, "you" he refers to is an idealized you, trying to subvert the system within the system? what does it mean to feel alive?

finished I of ch. 2. interesting ideas: subverting a system while within the system itself (makes me think of cixous for some reason), the fear of being Seen, truth and the nature of truth, fixed roles played in society, etc.

finished with part I! super engaged so far. in the rest of part 1 he discussed the nature of truth, the pursuit of "journey before destination," and man's innate inability to be honest about himself. he uses 2+2=4 as a representation of all of nature's laws and a symbol for what he's trying to escape. all this raises several interesting questions such as: what is truth? is there only ever one truth? meaning of life?

i am really enjoying this book so far! Dostoyevsky is always a challenging read but really enjoyable once you sit down with it. it's really engaging, there's not one sentence that goes by that doesn't force you to think. in this case, up until ch.9 there's been a big discussion of free will that i've loved. tldr; people do/desire weird/unhelpful stuff because they want to prove they live and are not simply alive.

Carina is finished with She Who Became the Sun (The Radiant Emperor, #1)
terrible, disappointing. synopsis: power-hungry once-victim believes that her suffering gives her the right to sacrifice anything for her ultimate purpose, the pursuing of her fate (which, disappointingly enough, is as unimaginative as ruling the world). i can't believe i had to read 416 pages from the villains POV. absolutely no sympathy. hate the main character.

wait, to sum my thoughts cause i got one (1) coherent thought for once: i would have really enjoyed this book when i were younger cause this is the representation i was looking for. HOWEVER, i think im at the point where representation, for me, can't be the Best part of the book. like, sure, she writes decent-- but i think it's overdramatic. it's exciting, sure.
