As a reread I rated it in advance.

This is a bit like going to your grandma’s house and having her tell stories about how she stood on the doorstep awkwardly with TS Elliot.

I love it as an audiobook.

Getting lost behind her couch in a pile of Dickens editions sound like the best thing ever.

The specific ways vice bends the soul and the metaphors for the unbending are so helpful. It has been a recent thing for me to understand that there is a true virtue that is corrupted in sin, so digging into the opposites and the progression and the worthy goal has been transformative.

Esolen is a good Virgil.

Expected sentimentality and it isn’t. It scoffs at it.
When you have a good curriculum, trust it.

Rounding the bend into the finish and the only observation worth anything is that those who do not learn from history are doomed to repeat it.

I think Republican’s get squeamish about Watergate and can’t teach it to their kids. They don’t know how to explain the “sins of a father”. Then they are shocked when their children are fooled by the exact same plays worked by a different team.

This book reads like a game of Battleship. They get information, verify it, and then test it against the White House Attorney General. They glean information based on the response as much as anything.

It seems like every Welsh story has this same entry point - some things always happen and will always be happening. It is like a world worm is bound around time squeezing it to create one core story or dream, usually a tragedy. And that is what gives the place, place. So you don’t start with a sense of scene, but you end up knowing the place. It’s a little disorienting.

It isn’t that nothing happens up to this point, but more happens in War and Peace between 35% and 75%

Definitely mythology and not novel, but still pleasant

That said, we’ve reached Beren and Luthien

Of her books, this is the one that is the most to the point.

I don’t mind stories and soul searching, but this one is just the concepts and application.

I think it’s all down hill from here… Napoleon retreats defeated, lots of people are dead.

This world has a map that bleeds through in Pilgrim’s Progress.
We need an adaptation with a map marking the main features showing the teeth of the monsters and their death, then we need another adaptation of Pilgrim’s Progress with a map showing the same world but with the critical places redeemed in time. We need to see the bones of the monsters put down.
Then a modern novel about this land.

In which King Arthur says a many headed Dragon and a Giant and deals with an enchantress. If you are in need of fun, Spencer has giant worms jiggling in dark forests, knights, mistaken identity, and true love.

There are a lot of sticky phrases, but this seems like the kind of book that you have to read through once to be ready to read it.

This sits in a known, but forgotten world. Castle Despair exists, dragons fly, and there are enchantresses in the woods.
I would start someone with the Children’s Pilgrim’s Progress, go to the full book, then read this with Narnia for Lewis’s light interpretation.

Dear Wodehouse,
Are you ok? Is this a cry for help? I can’t believe Pop Glossop is over the hot water bottle and cats. Or that he would go by Roddy.
I would send help, but you’re dead,

Great note to track down later:
Google isn’t God or Satan. They are not a threat because they are overgrown boys who want to build a machine to outthink them, but because of their understanding of the human mind is pinched.

We worked through the history of transmitting ideas from Aristotle to texting, broke down brain adaptation, and discussed the facts of what people are doing right now.
Looking forward to the interconnection of arguments

Reading this with Esolen’s description of Dewey’s How We Think makes the educational manipulation of brain function that much worse, but also something we can recover from.
