Entirely hilarious. His lengthy descriptions of all the brands of every single piece of people's clothing is such an interesting depiction of narcissism and desperation to fit in. Also the casual violent thoughts are shockingly funny

I'm at a place in my own life where I'm seeing some my own experiences of first year uni friendship represented in the book. I feel seen.

Their sexual relations with anyone but each other are always stomach turning

The class differences, Connell's anxiety, and Marianne's insecurity sometimes make me feel like I'm viewing my own behaviour through a third person perspective.
Also, I think people are really overreacting about the lack of speech marks. It thickens the them of miscommunication, but also all the characters have such distinctive voices that it's not hard at all to know who's speaking and when.

Reading this makese reopened and deepened the ache I got from watching the series. The teenage experience is so heartbreakingly captured and I literally see myself in both of them (I think I'm their unborn child).

It's hard to decipher my own feelings about our narrator. There's a lot of pity for such a lonely young man, and an understanding of how life as a dreamer can develop from a coping mechanism to a cage because the loneliness is reinforced.
It makes me think about my own romanticism and how that influences my relationships.

I'm really enjoying the use of repetition, and the musical quality of the battle scenes. The words used are plain and help you mentally construct the scenes yourself, and then the prose helps fill in the pictures with all the mythical and dreamlike essence of fantasy.

Actually on page 575 but idk why this version has too little pages, but I was really or hoping Julian would be a bit more like Jimmy Stewart's character in Rope.

The fun in reading this book starts when you give up on the idolisation of academia and begin to read it the same way you watch American Pyscho or Fight Club. These characters and narrators are wholly unaware of their ridiculousness and ince you can see the satire in the authors intent, you can appreciate the humour and wit. They're all weirdos except for Judy Poovey :)
