I'm actually enjoying this: it reads very much like a middle-of-the-road early DS9 episode, and that's fine by me. It's not a great novel, it's not even 'The Never-Ending Sacrifice', but I've definitely read worse trek books

I'm having a weird spell of not reading right now. but when i started this, and kept trying to go back to it, i found it UNBEARABLY dull. i loved colwin's other books but yeeeesh, this is just endless ultraserious metaphors about grief and how socially awkward it is to be extremely wealthy, not because of poorer people but because it's just so haaard to be rich, you know?? abandoning it for now.

that's it, 3 stories in and I'm setting this aside for now, just too fucking depressing. Feels like the seductive grimness of Close Range bubbles over here into a sort of wilful nastiness i have trouble handling

'family man' didn't click for me until about an hour after i finished it, at which point i got extremely sad and upset

oh man, this has really got its hooks in me. Wish I'd started reading Le Guin years earlier

loving this. sweet and breezy and goes down very, very smooth

it's good, but it's suffering under a bout of distractable multi-book ADHD I appear to be having

genuinely makes me want to git gud at cooking

unrelentingly grim, this. men who believe firmly that life is misery and hard, thankless grind and nothing more. They've got a weirdly uneasy truce with this totally unforgiving environment that reminds me of a big, open-plan Overlook Hotel. in every story life starts out hard and then gets worse and worse, but in increasingly unusual ways, until we just stop and leave the characters to their misfortune. i like it.

i love the crazy little flashes of darkness that keep popping up in this before we immediately go back to the day-to-day stuff, but I don't think the teasing is heading anywhere in particular

there's something admirably ballsy about the premise 'a history of quantum physics, but half of it's just made up (have fun guessing which half)'

stopped to read 'Frankenstein' - too much of this is going over my head
