Halfway through. Catherine’s dead. Heathcliff vows vengeance. Nellie maintains her disapproval of all cast members. An early look at narcissistic personality disorder, bipolar disorder and sociopathy, with nothing to be said of the racism, classism and abuse propagated throughout.

After an impassioned and fitting speech from a coworker, it’s time for a reread!

Just started this. Not in love with it as yet. The author has gone to great pains to accurately portray daily life in a library, at one point even name dropping RFID. But, here’s the thing… nobody cares, least of all me… the librarian.

Instantly hooks the reader. A little funny, a little cozy, a little sinister, and I don’t think a neat ending is in store. Reminds me of my old trivia league, minus the murder of course…

Dark. Nobody really comes out clean in this one, but I thought the examination of justifiable homicide was compelling. A little convoluted but still suspenseful. I need a break from serious books for about after that.

I just realized I’m over halfway through, and then came to grips with the fact that I still have 400 pages left. This book is starting to get stressful, though.

Once again, Family Book Club brings with it conflicting emotions, obligation, discovery and torture. This is the story of a lunatic, who passes the time by fucking with an idiot.

Not sure if I’ll make it through this. Too much description and not enough action at the outset. You’ve always got a 50-50 shot with Stiefvater that the work will either be shit or genius.

This is one of my favorite series, and so far this book has not been a disappointment!

First title chosen for a family book club. Second experience with this author in 25 years. Hunter Thompson still sucks.

This marks the beginning of my descent into the vast unknown wilderness known as commercial fiction. At the end of this journey, I hope to become an expert in popular adult materials. Wish me luck.

Not sure what I think of this book. I was going to read it, then decided not to, then picked it up again when I saw it on a list somewhere. I don’t like this kind of story - vampires meets historical fiction, and as far as historical detail, it’s actually kind of lacking. But it reminds me of A Girl Walks Home Alone at Night, which is what’s keeping me reading…

I was considering putting this down, because at face value it’s a little lofty and academic, but little snatches of sentences kept turning up and reminding me that Zadie Smith can articulate the fine threads of human experience as well as Virginia Woolf. It’s not NW, not yet, but I can see the story picking up steam and taking shape beyond its dusty beginnings.

Surprisingly engaging for such an old novel… from 1975! Deanna Raybourn draws heavily on this novel for inspiration in her Veronica Speedwell series, but this source material is done much better.

This was pretty slow going. I wasn’t very interested in what was going on until almost the last chapter, and even then I just wanted it done. I thought Frank and Sarah overdid it with their treatment of the black people in this story. While not all white people were racist years ago, I would still expect even the most noble ones to exhibit some kind of confusion or aversion toward black people.

What a treat! After several false starts I finally found the groove, it’s the perfect story for this time of year.
