this book is literally just so nice to even look at. the stories and pictures are sooo beautiful and interesting. the history behind so many simple concepts in and aspects of folklore, mythology, and religion is genuinely mesmerizing. i already love this. not usually a fan of the whole “a picture is worth a thousand words” but in this case i’m ALLLL for it

i genuinely can’t stand this book i’m so sorry 😞 perhaps i haven’t gotten to the right parts yet but so far this book just makes me wanna take the fattest nap… the world building here is either too intricate for me to grasp the quality of or just rlly atrocious (leaning towards this one but yk)

i can’t tell if the main character is endearingly romantic or just a psychopath… perhaps both

jaw dropped. gagged. i did NOT expect this book to take such a sharp turn.

i fear this may be one of the saddest books i’ve ever read. i’ve already sobbed SEVEN times. please let there be some sort of happy ending. also the writing style is BEAUTIFUL. i often don’t really like when authors take too long to describe the background, but here it’s just so well done.

the lack of actual russian folklore hurts my heart but the characters are complex and pained enough for me to be able to overlook that absence entirely 😊😊

omg the parallels are so well written; they’re like obvious but not obvious enough to where you feel confident about it. they leave you intrigued to see what hints you can catch and analyzing everything that seems even remotely significant. also the way Sethe’s relationship w/ Denver was written in relation to her own mother… so tragic but lovely. also Paul D’s revelation had me GAGGED

henry separating mary from catherine makes me want to sob

her spending fifteen years to plot her revenge is so real. mycenae is a little boring so far BUT her inner monologue keeps me going

fantasy retellings are my life’s bread and butter

three months and i’m not even halfway thru… still such a good book tho. the intricacy of the details provided on (eastern) european conflicts and fables is so *chefs kiss*

the abrupt transition to his role as peacekeeper was so startling. like what. how did not a single person care enough to stop it or say anything serious about the absence of the victor’s mentor????
