Huxley discusses how the brain is actively perceiving everything; sensations, memories, perceptions. However, our survival is contingent on a bottleneck that funnels reality and cultivates consciousness. Mescaline, a psychedelic, interferes with this bottleneck, creating sensations and interference with consciousness. In neuroscience, this may be called the "default mode network" and could also explain psychosis.

Ceika lays out a very helpful groundwork for analyzing Nietzsche and Marx. I almost see where he's going with this because he discusses how both thinkers admit that perspectives are fundamentally limited to the conditions of their progenitors. This might lead to the Hegelian idea of contradiction, in that history repeatedly contradicts itself, like fighting for liberty in America while non-whites are persecuted.

I'm starting to see where Sapolsky is taking the novel. He is creating a basis for judging antisocial behaviors by looking extensively at a history of behaviors to evaluate intent, as opposed to evaluating intent within the confines of a certain incident. As the chapters proceed, his case for evaluating a longer history behaviors also grows. Some cool studies too, like how lying makes people want to clean themselves!
