This book is wild. Just the brutal massacre you can imagine and then a bunch of rough and ready cowboys are like, "Oh dern, they dem just got poor Zeke."

Also, just realized I've been picturing Buffalo Hump as Mel Brooks in Blazing Saddles.

My two hot takes so far:

1. I remember reading this book a few years ago when it was called Outlander by Diana Gabaldon.

2. Natalie is like the worst version of Marmee you could possibly imagine. March > Mills.

Two Book Dan is back, Bay-bee! And this time I'm splitting my reading between this novel that asks, "what if the Kardashians were British?" and a dense history on a German civil war that happened between 1618 and 1648 and how that shaped modern Europe. In the following essay I will explain how these are related by... [show more]

I'm 100 pages in, and this book is really pushing on my "When to give up on a book, sub clause: Classics" rule.

Mark Twain hated Austen but apparently read this book every two years, and it's really making me rethink Twain.

It's like less of a novel and more a collection of interconnected short stories, but the only thing that connects them is that almost nothing happens.

"The essay went online at midnight on June 30, 2023. It would run in the hard copy of the Sunday paper on July 2."

I happened to be reading this on July 1.

I've got big thoughts about this book. Not all of them good. And that includes the quality of said thoughts. Because like my grandfather before me, "I just ain't that smart."

The writing is really good, but I just do not have any sympathy for rich people.

Oh, your husband cheated on you? I hope your pillows are soft as you cry yourself to sleep in your house on Martha's Vineyard.

This guy does suck though. She said she never saw any red flags and then goes on to describe how awful they both are.

"This tool kit also comes in handy if the previous male has resorted to another trick: plugging up the female's genital opening. The gambit is only partially effective, as male number two simply uses his scrapers, pike poles, and hooks to remove the bung."

Truly glad I've only come across knotting in modern romance. Ali Hazelwood can write a good story about werewolves, but let's leave insects out of it.

Pretty fun book, but despite that one sentence, it's not *that* type of book...

God damn do I enjoy a book without quotation marks. You could probably give me a copy of Morning Glory Milking Farm with all the quotes deleted, and I'd assume it was written by Shakespeare.

"The Original Uncut Version" I don't know Bobby, maybe you should have listened to your editor about cutting out those 70,000 words.

This is really testing my rules about when to DNF a classic or book club pick. Some pretty good writing (if a bit sexist/dated) hidden in an absolute slog of bullshit.

Reading this because part of it takes place at a wedding in Cancun, and I happen to be going to a wedding in Cancun next month. But the wedding is terrible, and a character has a broken ankle from training for a marathon, so now I'm getting nervous.

There are so many characters and they are all slightly older than me so it feels like I'm reading about all of my cousins if my family was much richer.
