It is a difficult book, not because it is hard to understand but because it is hard not to get bored by it. There is no plot, not an ounce of suspense, and not even a clear character development. Dostoevsky is simply contemplating what would happen if an utterly good and honest man lived in a modern society. He mainly explores the themes of justice and religion. Personally this book doesn't speak to me.

I like the fact that there is a lot of implicit information. This book requires deep thinking and focus. It can be challenging at times. Nonetheless, I still can't quite fathom where this story is going. If you love this book, I would very much like to know why !

This is definitely one of the weirdest books I've ever read. I won't be reading Dostoevsky again any time soon.

I am 200 pages in, and the first day is not over yet. Is this book set over the span of a weekend ?? 😂

I don't understand why they refer to him as the “idiot”. He is just outspoken, honest and authentic. The prince seems to be such a pure soul. I am wondering whether this perspective is a way to show, through contrast, how corrupt society is. Anyway, this book has hooked me — I am very eager to know what happens next.

By chapter 23, it feels as though Marjan Kamali is trying too hard to make the story depressing.

“She was doing calligraphy when I told her-” . I was sure she was the one behind it all. But that is so sad, how a single action can alter two people's lives forever. It reminds me of Atonement by Ian McEwan. Once again the innocent lovers are the victims. 🥺🥺🥺

I was just about to update my progress by saying that there is nothing more bittersweet and delicate than a book whose story unfolds a romance between young people amidst a war or a revolution. Then I decided to give in to two more chapters, and then—WHAT? I take back my words! There is nothing sweet about this love story; it is solely BITTER. I’M IN SHOCK 😭😭

What an interesting first chapter !
