brutal read

what is particularly bothersome about this book for me is the accuracy of the descriptions of body awareness OCD. I have experienced tremendous levels of health anxiety and squeamishness over being hyper aware of different bodily sensations all throughout my life and most of this book just feels like someone reading some of my least pleasant thoughts out loud to me.

read this to my cats last night. noticeable recoil when Dr Ray snaps at his cats about being the Emperor of the House.

"The Emperor penguins who had carried him to the science station wondered about him now and then. They had rescued him from the waters because they were afraid killer whales would eat him. Eventually, killer whales ate all six of the penguins that carried him, so this story was forgotten among their tribe."

I have surprised myself with the number of pages I dog-earned where Henry's inner thoughts re: the value of solitude mirror my own.

not unlike Neil McCauley of Michael Mann's film HEAT, Rollins draws a distinction between being alone vs being lonely that I very much identify with. (did you know Rollins is in HEAT? have you seen HEAT? go watch HEAT.)
