Joyce is on page 58 of 394 of Freedom in the Family: A Mother-Daughter Memoir of the Fight for Civil Rights
I like the different perspectives Tananarive & her mother share of the same events of their important civil rights activities. Some of the conflict in Tananrive's family & her viewpoint as a child, a teen and then a young woman of the impact of their family's involvement is heartfelt. As a parent, I am also getting some great lessons about how & when to teach important values to your children. I'm enjoying this read.

This book was so painful to read that I just had to stop. It was well-written & showcased good story-telling (even if slow at times). But the way she described the gruesome & inhumane massacre of the freed black residents of Colfax at the beginning of Reconstruction made me so angry & sick that I just could not read anymore. The precarious & dangerous position of freed blacks then was frightening. Hope to finish it.

It's starting off wonderfully. I'm so excited to get into this fine historical fiction. Lush, southern, complex and deftly colloquial.
