This book was so painful to read that I just had to stop. It was well-written & showcased good story-telling (even if slow at times). But the way she described the gruesome & inhumane massacre of the freed black residents of Colfax at the beginning of Reconstruction made me so angry & sick that I just could not read anymore. The precarious & dangerous position of freed blacks then was frightening. Hope to finish it.
