The more I read the harder I love this book. It started off so incredibly slow, but I kept going because I had an inkling that the story was going to blossom. And blossom it did, I’m loving the Paris arc and the Greek mythology motifs and Strickland and Stroeve’s characters are to DIE for, they’re so fascinating

I can’t bring myself to believe this book was written so long ago, it has such a modern and satirical feel, and I’ve totally fallen in love with it. The writing makes you nostalgic for every story and fairy tale you’ve ever been told

Okay but the energy between Strickland and the Mc is literally giving enemies to lovers, like that banter and “only I understand you” 🤨

This book reminds me like vividly of The Glass Castle but in the 1900s, and I’m totally eating it up. The historical aspect is so fascinating it’s like a mini history lesson but it’s subtly weaved in (cause obviously it’s not on purpose), but you can definetly tell it’s supposed to be from an 11 year olds perspective which gets a little tedious, but still is really good (and is supposed get better!)

So he’s low key sexist, but if we entirely ignore that fact he’s literally me in my past life?? That passage about the sense of wrong in a commonplace life style got me. Also this is like a writer’s book it’s such a fascinating perspective. Also witty writing? Lovee it. Something about when I first read the back of Bonds of Steel made me say “ u know I think me and Maugham are gonna get along realll well”

Why is pride and prejudice the iconic romance story? THIS BOOK. SO MUCH BETTER. The suspense?? The tears?? The hidden mystery and gothic vibe and summer twilight garden???? ROCHESTERS LOVE CONFESSION!? IVE NEVER HEARD A MAN SPEAK SO SWEETLY AND BEAUTIFULLY LIKE POETRY. I would like to hear by proclaim I will not be accepting a man any less poetical and obsessed with me than Fairfax Rochester. +this books a classic

🫶🫶❤️❤️😘 this book and me are besties, we drink wine and gossip about crazy Rochester and his crazy lady in the attic, his gothic house and boring rich people friends (like Victorian era mean girls but they’re also in a horror movie) 🍷👯‍♀️ it’s really fun hehe

Idk if its just because im reading Jane eyre at the same time as this book or what, but this book gives Jane Eyre (in her early years) and Anne of Green Gables vibes in the best way possible??? I’ve always loved Schwab’s writing style, but i think this book knocks it out of the park with not only that but also her characterization, mood setting, and the intrigue of the book’s core mystery. Amazing so far!!

I think.. im in love?? This reads like your standing on a rail of train track and you KNOW the train is coming, can feel the air hum and the ground shake, but still when the force of the train car slams into you, your struck stunned and dazed. I knew the plot was about to pick up but WOW. I can feel it again now too, after a brief lull, the hums back and things are about to get GOODDD

This is actually like my new favorite book??!!the prose, the writing, and the plot, all of it is beautifull and the books feels SO ahead of its time a lot of the time. Minus lord Henry, the sexist a**. The development of the characters and the pacing is so well done and you can feel the thought and time that went into writing this it’s just UGGHH SO. GOOD.

How is this book so beautiful?? So relatable yet entirely unrelateble??? Wilde had some magic at work while writing this boo, because I’ve never enjoy a classic 100 year old book this much
