Fellas, is it gay to dig up your work partner/roommate to embalm him in hopes of bringing him back from the dead?

Gosh this is equal parts depressing and reassuring. Le Guin's observation of politics from a decade and a half ago (before I was politically aware) are haunting in hindsight.

A collection of Le Guin's blog posts from the 2010s (imagine a whole book being published of just.. your musings on your blog. And I'm eating it up.) sweet and insightful so far.

A very straightforward bit of fantasy so far. Very classic, enjoyable, and above all charming. It was cool to see Ryan Cahill in a panel at Dragonsteel, and he has a ridiculously good personality, so I thought I'd give his book a try and so far I am not disappointed!

My first attempt with V.E. Schwab (I've been wary because she's chummy with Pierce Brown.. time to let bygones be bygones) and man, the first three paragraphs of this book are STRIKING. I am absolutely loving Marìa's POV, and so far Alice's is not really my thing, but I expect it'll pick up later.

"the effect wasn't so much ruined as /used/."
Eeeeeeeeesh that rubs me the wrong way. I've mostly been brushing off the casual sexism and fatphobia because it's like. Part of the vulgar wild west comedy tone. But I recently saw someone say that the release party for this book was in 2016?? Bit yikes for 2016 Mr Sanderson.

I do appreciate the unconventional relationship representation, and I do appreciate the fact that Wax is tender with Steris, but by God if he doesn't get a lot more than just tender with her immediately then I'm gonna have to step in. I know he's mourning his dead wife but steris is a goddamn catch and he better act like it posthaste

"[the newborn babies] stay awake, watching the lights and the costumes and the stripes on the tents, strangely alert for being only a few hours old" ok we get it they're manic pixie twee babies. But I think Mrs. Morgenstern maybe actually just doesn't know that babies CANT see after only a few hours. Certainly not past a foot.

DNF. Challenged myself to get over halfway through before giving up. Extremely slow and boring, not scary. I think the biggest disappointment was the god. His name being Ghostdaddy, I expected a clever and manipulative deity. Ya boi is just a big silent praying mantis, which is awesome, but I definitely feel mislead. Tons of info dumping about cars and moonshine. No significant development on mantis God by 55%

I got so bored with this book that I stopped halfway through to watch the movie to see if that would motivate me to finish it and the movie was so good that it made me want to finish the book but then the book is SO BORING that I couldn't even continue for the love of the characters, which the movie developed SO MUCH BETTER. Now I'm stuck wanting more of the characters only to be super dissatisfied by the book.

Reading two books at the same time about a man who can't remember his past, barely surviving in a strange world of magic, and his only friends are birds... It was a coincidence but it's definitely put me in a very particular mood

Before I finish and review this book I need y'all to understand something. IT WAS MEANT TO BE A HEARTBREAKING STUDIO GHIBLI FILM. It came out in 1986 and it transcends time and also format. It's a whole beautiful movie in my head and it will be preserved that way perhaps forever.
