Gayle knows that gay subculture was active and thriving in places like Mississippi. He talks about it in other works and has editted other people's work about rural queerness (specifically leather). At multiple points so far, I felt like I was reading a fucking horror novel.

The shift in tone from setting up this dramatic setting to read this psycho sexual whatever is going on to the protagonist saying "You are a desirable woman. You are not a dozen gerbils in a skin casing" is pretty funny.

Sometimes I find protagonists talking about just how awkward they are a little grating. The timing for this instance towed that line perfectly. I mean, enough that I had to immediately write this

"Could a woman he could barely see be sultry across fourty feet of grass, as she spoke to a lawyer on a walk at an Inn of Court?
