Interesting premise but virtually zero plot so far. Don't care about any of the character nor the prose. Just seems like a 'what if' without any idea of 'what then'.

I'm almost a fifth into the book, thinking it's boring as hell. And I heard there was a movie. I load up the movie and in 4 minutes, literally 4, they blitz through everything I just read. 4 minutes. A fifth of the book. I'm really struggling to read books right now because they all take sooo much time to get anywhere. Man oh man . . .

Not a fan of constantly jumping between so many characters. It'd be fine if it were just the main two I'm actually interested in. But now we're in the perspective of some random high school girl, and I just can't care. It feels like such a detour from the characters are want to hear from and hurts the book.

The nature descriptions are the best thing about the book, and all around it's pretty good. Only I think it's pretty empty at the moment. I don't think there's enough going on to justify its length or pace. And the story itself is pretty tame, especially if you compare it to his other works. I just hope things pick up.

I guess the internal politics of the farm are kiiiind of interesting . . . I think I'm realising most "classic" novels are not for me. I want some interesting characters and dialogue. I want some comedy. Something, idk, interesting. So many of these are slow, subtle and boooooring. Idk. WHere are the boobies.

If you can't tell, I'm losing my mind and books are really boring for me rn. Don't listen to me blaaaaaaaa.

I'm falling asleep. They set up this big rebellion for them to instantly win out of nowhere. And since then, it's just been plain, raw exposition of the system in place now. Sorry but I don't care Muriel the fucking goat is better at reading than dogs or that Boxer can't read past the letter D. Can something please HAPPEN.

So far, it's pretty similar to Catcher in the Rye. Unfortunately, I didn't like Catcher in the Rye. I don't know. It just seems like a whole lot of nothing.

It seems to do everything right---but for some reason just doesn't work for me. I don't think a novel format is best for it. It reads more like a screenplay, with little inner narration, and much more description and movement. I think that's why the movie is so much more impactful.

I don't know why, but even though it's a super short book, it's really hard to get through. And it's not like the plot moves slowly. I think it's to do with the prose. The sentences are just very short and matter of fact, which sometimes makes you read quicker, depending on the content. But here it's like 'Coraline ate an apple. She put it in the bin. She went to bed. She woke up.'

It's sweet and simple so far. I don't think it'll come close to the movie's quality at this rate, though, which I didn't expect it to, anyway. But a short, entertaining book to start the year so far.

Unbelievable descriptive writing. The way he paints this world is so thorough and textured. But it is just that. I don't think I'll make it to the end if that's all the book is. I guess, right now, it's more akin to an art gallery than a story. I hope more actual events happen down the line.

There's too much granularity. It takes us minute by minute through the whole process, meeting each doctor, filling out forms---just so many details unnecessary to the story. I feel its more a documentary on being admitted to this kind of facility and what it's like to go through these mental struggles, rather than an expressive narrative. It just doesn't feel like it's going anywhere or has anything to say or do.

Reeeeaaaaallly taking its time. I mean I'm 1/3 into the book and only now they MIGHT get to where the movie adaptation STARTS. Also the depiction of mental health is a hugely watered down and less intimate version of The Perks Of Being A Wallflower, and way more on the nose. But we'll see, I guess.

The best part is the descriptive writing. Really gorgeous imagery. Except, I'd say it's excessive. Imagery should be there to emphasise and flavour a scene. So when there's nothing happening, it's pretty useless. Once again, I just think more should be happening. I mean, everything before the party could have been cut out completely, except the tiny scene of seeing Gatsby for the first time.
