The middle portion is almost over thank God. For all this man's talents, I just do not care to read about the backstory of these wretched slave patrolmen who are so minor as to be NPCs, nor distant cousins of side characters, nor mothers of side characters, nor all the cold dispassionate people he fills this book with who wander around like ghosts going in and out of life because Jones is obsessed with prolepsis.

This one's pretty diabolical, hmm.

Man. The guy can write but this middle portion is so winding, unfocused, slow, and unfortunately concerned with people who are about as interesting as a bundle of sticks. Smh.

Ah, this is one of those silly and comical Christie's, and I'm enjoying it haha.

I have to say that this novel so far is nowhere near as enjoyable as the man's short stories.

Not what I expected at all!? It's actually written in a modernist, action-forward, minimalist style, third person present tense, very cool! I know! Me, saying present tense is cool! I guess I was expecting something more florid & Victorian haha

So far I don't like it as much as the short stories of Lost in the City, but I'm still having a hell of a time~

It happened like ten chapters ago but "face like a scone" is truly a nasty takedown.

Hugh Fraser hands down does the best voices of absurd Victorian old women.

Audiobook narration by the author is great so far. Wow. Sad but not too negative at all. How he traces the roots of his self-loathing and gender dysphoria to religious origins is fascinating. The jokes are good, sad, and mostly land. Do men really learn to hate themselves like this? Do men envy women their beauty and is that why they hate them? I'm so curious. This is a sort of mind I rarely think about.

Kind of cool so far, some great lines of imagery and detail, but also reminds me why I never want to read a thing about love, loss etc. written from the perspective of a professor by an actual professor ever again.

Staying up late to read this book while listening to SZA and crying my heart out
