this book can’t decide if it’s a romance, gothic horror, or mystery, and fails to execute any of those genres compellingly. i don’t believe in strict adherence to the rules of writing prescribed in elementary schools, but the sheer mass of tell instead of show renders it impossible for me to feel invested in this narrative. so much of the structure just comprises quotes by characters recounting past event.

excruciating. filled with passages i want to force all my friends to read bc if i’m the only person reading this drivel i’ll go insane. i fear this book club is not for me

the prose is extremely inelegant; it’s so blatantly dumbed down (especially from a human rights lawyer who used to work at the UN) that it must be a ploy to portray her as the salt of the earth and to distract from her complicity as a wealthy Facebook senior staffer. it’s egregiously bad. she’ll write, “I was like, ‘TK,’” instead of “I said, ‘TK.’” distractingly horrible
