It’s a good light read but the child, Piper, is supposed to be 11 but she sounds half that age. It’s killing suspension of disbelief. Sloppy writing, sorry to say. I may skip to the end to see what happened.

Only a tiny bit in, listening.....her name. Stuffy, much? Character names are so important.

Reading for my book group.

So tired of so many novels making a big deal about a character being gay. How about just have gay characters and don’t make a big deal about it. Also, this novel is about domestic abuse, not names and the effect they have on us, on who we become.

The last time I read this book many, many years ago, I didn’t notice all the em dashes. I do love the stream of consciousness writing, and I love the setting, and how Kerouac is dealing with his fame (not very well). I just wish there weren’t so many em dashes. I tried rereading On the Road a couple of years ago and it felt dated, but this doesn’t feel dated. I’m loving it.

I’m enjoying this debut novel byMargot Douaihy. Gillian Flynn’s imprint at Zando. And the cover is spectacular, isn’t it?

I’m reading for a book club. I would likely finish even if I wasn’t because of all the hype and because I’ve loved other Kingsolver novels:The Prodigal Summer, Poisonwood Bible, Bean Trees. So far, though, I keep returning to: why do readers love this novel? Don’t people know about opioids? Hasn’t everyone read or watched Dopesick? Yes, the writing is good. She’s the queen of simile and metaphor.

I don't know whether I'll finish. I was excited to start and on page 38, I was all in, looking forward to the rest but now, I'm not so sure. So much backstory of side characters and I find myself skimming. Now, around page 100, I'm thinking to put the novel aside and read something else. Love the writing but...........

I wish this one were shorter and wish it stuck to Roland's story. For now, I'm putting it aside.
