3/4 done and some thoughts;
- can’t help but compare certain scenes to DV and Substance Use themes:
Lying to friends/family, keeping and covering up secrets, counting days and trying to have a goal of a certain # of days to prove there isn’t a problem, trying to find a hypothetical line that if crossed means there will be boundaries, etc.
- 3/4 of the way thru means shit will hit the fan soon I’m guessing.

Part of me wants to jump to the end to read the inevitable cliff hanger like we did in elementary school….
I’ll stay strong and resist that temptation.

The side characters are so interesting

“There is always pain in healing,” the lieutenant interrupted. “To fully avoid it is impossible.”

Cue my heart falling for these two

“every night when I dreamt, I was trying to bring all the pieces back together. I was trying to find my way back to you.”

It’s amazing all of the ways love is shown in this book. There are so many tender, heartfelt, caring moments.

“I know I cannot keep you safe or protect you from the worst of this war. But for now, let me feed you. I know you must be hungry.”

“There shouldn’t be any [….] bombs. You should get to be children, young people, adults who can dream and love and live your lives without all of this horrible mess.”

“…an unexpected wave of emotion struck her chest. She hadn’t cried much the past few weeks. Indeed, she thought she had recovered from most of the trauma she had experienced, letting it hollow her out. But perhaps it had only been buried. Perhaps she had shoved it down to dark forgotten places and it had grown roots while she had been sleeping.”

“How could he mourn something that he couldn’t remember?”

“I see the beauty in what has been but only because I have tasted both sorrow and joy in equal measures.”

Can’t help picturing Lidia as a Charlie’s Angel x Angelina Jolie in Tomb Raider and Mr. And Mrs. Smith x Electra x Matrix love child.

I’m a third in and this isnt what I expected…. It feels like the story’s been dragging. Knowing this author, everything will happen in the last 100 pages but I have to make it that far.

Thoughts so far as I listen to the audiobook:
- Who doesn’t love his voice??
- * cue the ‘I recognize some of these words’ meme. *
- Good reminder that the universe is huge, we are small, yet we and the universe are made of the same things.
- We are on a floating rock in space.
- There’s so much we don’t know.

We just got a touching moment and now this insurmountable loss? I’m riding a roller coaster of feeling right now but I’m hooked.
