I am barely any distance into the book and I’m already angry that Goodreads decided to lead the book blurb with a quote that uncritically echoes Humbert’s term for Dolores of “nymphet” as if it’s in any way a real descriptor and not a tool of Humbert’s for dehumanization & self-justification. And I’m angry at the New Yorker for providing that quote. >_> But the book itself, so far, seems well done.

Wish I was liking this book more than I am. It has plenty of interest going on, and yet I find myself frequently bored when reading it.

Every time I think I know where this story is going it takes a turn somewhere else, in the best of ways. Still enjoying it a lot, and things seem to be ramping up!

I keep borrowing this book, making a bit of progress, and then having my library hold run out, hah. That said, the issue’s at least 50% outside complications—I’m liking this book much more than I liked The Poppy War!
