it’s simple: if i see botany in the blurb, i must read it.

chapter 42 paralleling spook’s entire situation (i.e., his fight with quellion’s allomancers) has to be indicative of him being manipulated by ruin through “kelsier.”

what the heck.

“i know you want to write the whole of it, every detail, so that we’ll never forget again, but owen, have mercy: don’t make me remember too well. don’t make me lose them again.
if you must write it, write it as a story or a song. a tale overheard, about other people. write it without you or i, but only they.”
“alright, love. like a story, then.”

“that time, i died smiling.
you’ll have to tell the rest of it.”

this essentially reads as one giant conversation between themselves, & i am worse off for it.

“god, please, don’t ask me to write it all down again.
it’s your turn to tell it, love.”

as the remainder of her second death is written not from his perspective, but hers.

i greatly appreciate alix e. harrow’s decision to write owen’s narrative as though he is addressing no one other than una. there’s an added intimacy to their story in doing so, with the consistent use of “you” & “your” when referring to her.

moreover, it very much reflects owen’s own thoughts in chapter 3: “i came to believe that whoever had written them had truly known you. […]”

“it felt momentous, fateful, even. as if you had watched over me—haunted me, guided me, saved me thrice over—solely so that i could be here, now, with your name on my tongue.”

zane venture. that’s it. that’s all.

“it was beautiful, & it felt like a betrayal.” described a facet of grief in its most succinct form.

“i wish i were the night, so that i might watch your sleep with a thousand eyes.”

this is what i expected & wanted more of.

reading chapter 17 was absolutely nerve-racking (i’m having so much fun).

“it’s a crime that the marvel should die like this. no song. nothing but silence & the unblinking gaze of the stars to herald the end of one of the great monuments of the golden age. & i hear in the back of my mind, that age-old truth of darkness whispering to me.
death begets death begets death…”

“i don’t know how you’ve carried your heart for so long. i thought maybe i could take some of the weight for you. i thought that, in spite of everything, we could kick our way out of this together. but it’s too heavy, peter. you’re too heavy. you’re drowning me.”

absolutely gut wrenching.

thrice now, the characters have introduced very interesting topics/possibilites to their situation only for it to be ultimately nothing.

oh, jean moreau… you deserved better than what you got.

the sunshine court being written in jean’s pov hurt, especially knowing that he was fated to be a part of the list of ravens who couldn’t make it through one more year, that this was the only draft wherein he survived.

“i hate snakes.”
“i thought you grew up playing in the woods.”
“i did,” he says, “& every time we came across a snake, i had to completely disassociate & pretend it wasn’t happening so the kids i was hanging out with wouldn’t find out.”

i laughed for a good minute.

with how many times rin has been betrayed, you’d think she would have learned her lesson by now.

he had a dream of her dying, & he is crying, utterly devastated by it. he had a dream of her dying, & HE IS CRYING, UTTERLY DEVASTATED BY IT.

reading the dragon republic is the equivalent of riding an emotional roller coaster but it can only go in one direction, & that is down.

& apparently, it only gets worse!

watching the gameplay of fears to fathom: ironbark lookout, resulted in me being deeply engrossed in the microgenre of strange things happening in the woods. so… naturally, here i am. (i also needed a small break from fearless by lauren roberts).

“you know, i dream about you,” he said. “ever since i left. i dream of us watching the sheep. falling asleep beneath the trees.”
“that sounds so peaceful,” she whispered.
“it is. […] until i wake, & i’m alone.”

nightmare’s nicknames for elspeth: darling, dear one, dearest. :’)

“the nightmare was mumbling to himself, ‘it’s hardly my fault, dearest, that they are pathetic swimmers.’”

elm, whew.

“all these years. even as a child… his mother had… because she had been afraid.
he hadn’t meant to make her afraid. he hadn’t meant to make any of them afraid.” [sobs].

the author had way too much fun writing james’s dialogue.
…& i, on the other hand, am having way too much fun reading it.

will being annoyed by everyone’s inability to put two & two together, especially elizabeth & simon, has been my favorite thing throughout.

the tension between will & james is insane. the author did an immaculate job with james’s commentary—round of applause for c.s. pacat, woo!
