“The Squid Who Fell in Love with the Sun"...if you need one specific reason to read this, it's that story. Took my breath away then left me in a pool of tears. I LOVE this story.

Whoah, never realized Prodigy wasn't making ANYTHING up in his music. He was rough. And what a read. I recommend the audio version of this because you get to hear his story in his own voice; him being a rapper, this is the BEST way to "read" this memoir. Note: I'm biased because I have loved Mobb Deep since the 90s. Had this on my to-read list for two years. Prodigy's passing kicked it to the top of my reading list.

I'm really enjoying this novel on this second try. As I suspected, I think I'm just ready to read something like this now, when a few years ago, I wasn't. The info dumps are actually really enjoyable. The plot is super slow, but I don't mind because the characters and the world are so interesting. But there IS a plot, so that's good, too.

Um...what's going on? What's the plot? Who knows. Strong strong voices. I enjoy that. Nina Burgess, I don't enjoy her at all, but she's real (and the only name that sticks to my brain). Violent, crass, corrupt, ok, I've seen this "Jamaica" plenty of times in literature. I know the patois, so I'm not wowed by that part of it. I just NEED a plot and there is none. So...will I finish? Not quickly.

There's a lot of "look how Jamaican I am" in this and as someone who's been to Jamaica and knows the slang quite well...nothing new or exotic to me. The information he's conveying is amazing, but I'm not enjoying the way the story is told, not so far. I'm kinda bored. The characters talk too dang much and not enough happens as a narrative. I'm not enchanted yet at all by this. Will keep going, though.

Um...I feel like I am missing something with this story. What the hell is going on and why? And all the "man=bad" and "woman=victim who needs to fight" is getting on my nerves. Not digging the drawing style, either. But shall keep reading, though. Maybe there's a twist?

argh, the tangents are driving me nuts.stick to the main plot, i don't want to know the story behind every item in the room. also, this has that usual super patriarchal feel of an igbo novel written by a man- that's both a complaint and a not to its realness (well, not real in the relationship between my parents, thank goodness, but most others). still, totally addicted to this, though.

he writes the way my uncles in the village speak. interesting. it's been a while since i've read a nigerian novel that wasn't afraid to do this. i'm really enjoyng the point of view, too. i don't agree with comparing chimamanda to achebe. that's never made sense to me (though, i love her work). but comparing obioma to achebe, YES, i see that clearly in this book, at least.

How many times can this science fiction novel say, "But this wasn't a science fiction novel, this was real life!" Ok, ok, we GET it. *Eyes rolling*. Also, considering how sexist and white male focused classic science fiction and video games have been in the past, to say that these games and sf novels were what attracted and prepared/trained recruits for the war implies some SERIOUS problematic shit.

oh and there's a line in there that implies that the recruits are diverse...it's such a lazy line. you can't just say everyone's of various races/ages/genders and think you've done your job. and then go one to have your main character be all white and male except for the love interest-y girl. gimme a break. why even TRY. it's almost insulting.

ok...gonna be honest...i'm not feeling this. it's ready player one all over again, same ton, same character, same attractive but cool game playing female character, i mean, this is reading very formulaic and…well, childish, and not in a excellent YA Lit way, more like in the cliché nerdy white guy way. i’m not halfway through, so I’m still hoping. but will wheaton narrating is NOT helping.

so far so good. my only worry is that it'll have the same daddy-issue Grasshopper Jungle had. doubtful, but it's a worry. also, the nerdy friends are cliche...but whatever, i'm in. i loved ready player one, so i have high hopes. and no, i don't expect this to be the same...why would i want the same thing? but yeah, good beginning.

This is the first MacCammon novel I've read in decades (unless you count my re-reading of Swan Song). It's ok so far. It's engaging and very post- apocalyptic. But nothing new. I'm enjoying it.

i have never read a novel where such importance is put on sperm. ugh. and i refuse to believe this is a symptom of the central character being a teenage boy.

The issues I mentioned in previous status updates only get worse. This book is unique and amazing for many reasons and worth the read, but this issue of "sperm is the foundation of humanity" is messing with my enjoyment of this book. it's repeated over and over and i'm not allowed to pretend it wasn't said.

...and let me add that this book reads WAY too male for my liking. the narrator even thinks that children come from men's sperm. it's a very exclusive way to tell a story and it's off-putting to me as a woman. i don't mind reading male characters (of course i don't) but this does it in such a way that i feel VERY sure that this book was not written for a reader like me. and that is something else.

Ok, so the main character is horny and shit, and he's not sure if he's gay, giant bugs are hatching from people's body. so why does this read like NOTHING IS HAPPENING? i don't get it. might be the tone. it's so distant and indifferent. might be the audiobook reader (whom i find really annoying. he makes female characters speak the way the stereotypical gay men). i bought this book because i liked the title. hmmm

I picked this up because I wanted something fun and biting. It is all that so far. Note: the Nigerian American character is TOTALLY off. TOOOOOTALLY. Like, "author just read up Nigerians on Wikipedia" kind of off. I'm Nigerian American; I know the struggles VERY VERY well. This book doesn't get it. BUT this doesn't ruin the book. Still fun and biting and excellent YA.
