This book is very lush and beautiful in atmosphere, though I can’t say I fell in love with any of the characters. I found myself wanting to complete the work because I wanted to know how the author would resolve the various threads. I trusted the author to resolve the story well and in an interesting way, and my trust was not misplaced. It remains worth noting that at no time did I deeply care about the characters

This simply won’t be for everyone, given it is an academic work dealing with a huge time span. However, the literary and cultural traditions and norms present in dynastic China up until the presence of Colonizing forces really surprised me. Well worth a read for anyone interested in the global perspectives of gay history.
