This is the best book I’ve read in years, and it’s the 62 one I’ve read in 2024. This may be Notaro’s best work, a wild thing to say for a book without any of her signature hilarity.

Notaro’s range as a writer is prolific, and her roots as an investigative reporter are showing in the very best way here.

She makes this story come alive in a way a podcast never could. And I love a podcast! But this? More.

This is the best book I have read since the last book I read by her. My favorite person on earth right now. She is my Eudora Welty.

This is one of the more insightful, impactful, and moving books I have ever read. For context I read 82 books last year. I loved it so much that when I closed it after finishing, I kissed it at the top center of the cover without thinking, as if it were the Torah, and because the experience could be concluded no other way. 12/10.

This book was fucking gorgeous. It was everything I could have wanted and so much more. I felt and expressed aloud the entire gamut of human and autistic emotions when I read this book. And who could ask for anything more? It even taught me Torschlusspanik while I’m in Germany for the 1st time, discussing having children for the first time at the age of 41. That’s almost enough to make me believe in magic again.
