A beautifully written book thus far. I love the way it's jumped between the family stories and Ai-Ming's life. As well, the Chinese characters are nicely tied into the English writing!

The emphasis on the similarities of music and math are also striking to me since I am a STEM person and dabble in understanding music. Overall loving the experience. Just unfortunate I'm being beat up by school rn.

I eye-rolled at kafka and got in a reading slump. It's probably just me though cuz I feel like people like him. Anyways picked this up and I'm thoroughly enjoying it. It's very intense, I was fighting tears on the bus reading it. (Also are goodreads servers acting up right now??)

Well um this is an experience to read. Also genuinely can’t tell if he’s intentionally writing the women so oddly.

Very desolate feeling. I almost feel like crying each time something is disappeared bc some of the characters just can’t feel sad about it in the same way. The writing is also pretty easy to follow so it’s nice for the school semester (My brain is tired).

Swapping between crying (metaphorically) about algorithm analysis and crying (less metaphorically) about Elena Knows

Also the last chapter I read I didn’t comment on. Mainly because it is just metaphor for dorian being not old. And, just Dorian being like mwahaha I’m not old and ahhhh I’m now paranoid. I know there’s more to it but honestly am not super interested in the chapter, but get its importance.

Henry simultaneously is friends with Dorian but sees him as an interesting case study. I like to believe that Henry doesn’t actually believe all his sometimes really negative and bad takes, but feeds them to Dorian to see how much they’ll stick. Sort of like removing someone’s innocence as a game. However, with how he tried to support Dorian after someone’s death,, I’m honestly unsure. Poor Basil.

Okay well jk. What a shit disturber harry is. The vibe of acting non Victorian societal standards in this book vs how so much was about standards and appearance in Dracula is interesting. But it’s 2 am and im not going to think much more on that thought.

Oh, this is quite theory heavy. I enjoy the idea that “art isn’t meant to be an autobiography” was brought up. Being an artist, of any form, feels like it is really a balance between making something about what you know but extending it to be relatable to the viewer (or at least vibe with the viewer). But then, also, I sort of hate how everything “has” to be relatable. Gah.

Also this is very gay lol.

The introduction made me want to read Jekyll and Hyde. I’ve been thinking about how people have a “formal/work” side to them and a “personal” side to them (and how these things seem to be merging in the recent years). And, the introduction made me get the impression that this idea will further be explored in this book and in Jekyll and Hyde lol.

Oh yes a safety pin. Really can’t tell if Lucy and Mina have bromance chemistry or are actually secretly gay. Tbh I think the usage of pretty could’ve also just changed throughout time.

Finally back into reading this book after a multi-year hiatus; god, the arcturus prints just turn me off reading.

Just read the first chapter/entry and despite the fact I know the whole plot, I am in suspense. I also just find it silly and goofy his descriptions of other countries’ people, written in the POV of an english man by an irish man.

Finished the first story, I’m not sure how many pages that is tbh. It feels more direct than her other books, if that makes any sense. You feel the same depth of emotion reading it but the characters woes feels more spelled out.
