Poignant. Heart wrenching (double entendre haha).

A fascinating read. Too many thoughts, not enough words. The story incites my indignation, and it becomes deeply aggravating. There is this violent and rebellious acceptance of the situation one is in; it’s all you can do I guess. We all go through this notion where one is feeling so hopeless in a situation that our one last act of defiance is acceptance.

“What prompts decisions when you are utterly alone?”

She acts as the sole architect and authority of her journey, of her purpose or lack thereof. Exercising her human will.

Ring-a-ring o' roses,
A pocket full of posies.
A-tishoo! A-tishoo!
We all fall down!

They escaped the cabin for the vast, undulating plains, only to find themselves still imprisoned, shackled by reality itself. This pervasive, inescapable (ubiquitous?) dread keeps its distance while you are in a safe harbor, but its omnipresent existence makes you weary.

One day, that dread will simply cease to matter.

Sacrificed, submitted and resigned to date.
Klara and the Sun.

I don’t know what to think nor what to feel. It evoked emotions I haven’t felt in a while and I feel so helpless. I wish I was there in a way, to just be there for Klara. I get it I really do with how it ended but she deserves better. I can’t really think clearly now.

The slow fade into the horizon Klara. Go gentle into that goodnight.

“I refuse to accept this world has become so cruel”.

Same buddy, same.

“I’m just not like a show, okay? I can’t sparkle and entertain all day”.

That’s something I’ve learned over time. Knowing when not to ask is as equally as important as knowing when to ask.

I have anticipated the revelation but it was still quite sad. Pretty fuckin sad. The looming dread.

There’s something about Klara’s innocence that I pity. I guess it’s her ignorance to it all. Her optimism at times feels like she’s lying to herself.

But that’s the thing about hope. Damn thing never leaves you alone.

You can tear down a fence. Then put up another somewhere else. A land of fences is so temporary. Hedges give a sense of history properly set down in the land.

Helen knows what she saw.

Hanky panky.

Melania the housekeeper is really funny.

I have noticed "The Mother" can be cold and distant at times. Klara recognises that the blades of grass are easier to distinguish when she is closer to them than when viewed from the bedroom. This shift marks a movement from observation to participation (looking to living?). Klara begins to partake in the world rather than merely observe it, making a concerted effort toward what it means to be human.

Immersive story

Josie’s mother carries a somber presence, which creates an interesting contrast with Klara. At times, their roles seem to reverse, as Klara gradually becomes more human. Initially, Klara compartmentalises her perception by dividing her field of vision/point of view into "boxes". However, she later realises that the more she observes, the more feelings become available to her.

“O ship setting out on a distant voyage,
Why don't I miss you the way other people do After you've vanished from sight?
Because, when I don't see you, you cease to exist.
And if I feel nostalgia for what doesn't exist, The feeling is in relationship to nothing.
It's not the ship but our own selves that we miss.”

And I feel that it was worth being born just to hear the wind blow.”

The sunset is beautiful, and so is the night that remains.

XLVI: I don't always manage to feel what I know I should feel. Only very slowly does my thought swim across the river, Weighed down as it is by the suit men forced it to wear.

It’s slowly winning me over. Chapter 5 discussed unbridled positivity, righteous indignation and how discombobulated human emotions are.

Is that how we truly feel towards a situation or do we simply quote these emotions. Borrow them. Our feelings being derivatives.

Almost everybody gets involved before they ever talk about their feelings.

Brings one’s authenticity to question.

The author is trying so hard to paint the lead character as this conventionally awkward archetype. I could be mistaken, and I’m not one to speak especially as I haven’t read that many books, but it seems like it’s a recurring theme/trope across modern literature. I can understand its uses but it’s so forced. I might be unfair but the story is burning like a cigarette so far.

In Fuyuko’s line of work (proofreader), no matter what you do, no matter how hard you look, some mistakes always make it through.

Her work is emblematic of life itself. It echoes it. There will be missteps, oversights, and falterings.

Sometimes your best isn’t enough and we must live with that.

We must not be burdened by them.

Keep on swimming eh?

"He profoundly despised the attitude, common throughout the Near East, tries to soothe sensitivities and cares for appearances; the attitude that makes one whisper to ones guests."

In Lebanon, and especially in my town, reputation and appearances are everything. Obsession with appearances can make communities shallow and disconnected. Relationships become about status instead of sincerity. Prevents genuine dialogue.
