Ah. I wish this had been around when I was a teen. 'Twould have saved my poor mother the fear and worry of me being exposed to Twilight (which I snuck from a cousin and read in defiance, a secret I kept from my mother until I was well in my 20s.)

I went into this with zero knowledge of the premise or characters. And wow, it's not what I was expecting (the Aristocrats of various Continental countries are various mythical monsters!) but I'm having fun. It's February. I'm allowed to have fun. And my trust placed in all the rave reviews of Rowntree's books is proving to be very safely placed.

This is gut wrenching. The Ozarks haven't changed much in 114 years in some respects. If something similar to this happened now it would still be a complete shock.

Reading about Badger's kitchen while it's snowy and cold outside my own door makes me want to bake.

Choosing to DNF. Although this book probably inspires most who read it, it's left me with big feelings that are the reverse of what the book was intended for. Maybe one day I can read it without the words feeling trite. Reading about how God set someone free from conflict avoidance and finding their identity in Christ through a 4 month RV trip and buying the wrong color of UGGs just hits me the wrong way right now.

Reading with anxiety that all these characters I've "watched" grow up will make poor choices and come to ruin. Then, immense peace that Christina loves these characters as much as I do. Growing and healing can be painful, but it's a necessary part of life. Life isn't about living it out perfectly, it's about learning from our mistakes and forgiving others for theirs.

Do I have time for 5 books right now? No. But will I still attempt to make time for them all? Yes. When the interlibrary loan system says jump, you pull out the trampoline.

Rereading to refresh my memory before I begin Christina's latest book, A Menagerie Of Dragons. This series is a balm to my weary soul. Books that make you want to read other books are life giving. I truly believe Christina wrote these with homeschool mamas in mind!
