When she's right, she's right. But Kipnis has a frustrating habit of resorting to hyperbole.

also, when bch says that physical discipline has "given way" to psychic discipline i think he's totally off the mark. like i do agree that now we see an increased focus on mental health puchic maladies burnout SAD etc, but these discourses seem more like an extension (not precise) of physical discipline. the focus is always on biochemical etiology of mental phenom. (eg neurotransmitters, brain-gut nexus, &c.)

bch must have chronic "on that damn phone syndrome" bc wym under neoliberalism the body is no longer the focus of capitalist discipline? do people no longer work in factories? do people no longer produce physical commodities using their bodies? are we all eating holographic meatloaf?

just read the diner scene‚ wondering what kind of world this book takes place in. there are multiple instances where the people in the book seem to shy away from the disgustingness of hogg and yet they seem almost completely apathetic (immobilized, powerless) to do anything with this aversion

I'm a little over half way and honestly... i find most of the protags to be irritating. it feels like the authors are trying to prove that they're profound, violent, tortured, and interesting but they come across and disingenuous. that being said, Oh, youth is probably the best short story in the anthology. It's one of the only to actually have any semblance of atmosphere aside from "tee hee we're having rough sex"
