“Of course you hate poetry, beloved,” Sadie said gently. “You are poetry. And you don’t like yourself very much.”

I’ve been thinking about this lately, not in the context of a potential lover, but in the context of friends. I have a friend who shows/tells me everything about herself without prompting and one hardly tells me anything without my asking. So different.

“This time we aren’t fighting the Yankees, we’re fighting our friends. But remember this, no matter how bitter things get, they’re still our friends and this is still our home.”

Oh Atticus, I am suffering under this same burden and it hurts acutely.

I told myself there was time. Of course that’s what we always tell ourselves, isn’t it? We can’t imagine time running out. And God punishes us for what we can’t imagine.

Explaining about how the storm that Libbit had drawn scared her when it arrived King writes, “She was frightened-as though she had whistled for a dog and got a wolf.”

Regarding Elizabeth and her newfound talent for drawing:

“Her gift was hungry. The best gifts-and the worst- always are.”

Solid gold. This man is really delivering some quality writing in this book.

The unconscious mind writes poetry if left alone.

❤️ This is how it should be. The holidays spent with people of your choosing that make you feel settled and content.

No other author I read uses foreshadowing as frequently or to such good effect as does Uncle Stephen.

This gorgeous cover art makes me angry at my Kindle Oasis that does not display in color and that I can’t tell my friend-on-hiatus how beautiful I think it is.

How fun that they walked over to Lake Marie and that I have walked through the campsite that they are staying in. I’ve been to Lake Marie so many times. I’ve spent many hours on and around it and have enjoyed so much time there; it makes listening to the story more special.

When the title of chapter 1 is Thou Shall Not Trust A Two-Faced Bitch, I think this might be a pretty good fit for me. Lol.

“They were all bound together in a larger family, now. Sisters in the best sense.”

Engaging writing so far. I like that our main character is Maori.

I like the author’s use of foreshadowing. it is a literary device that, when well done, I feel can really add to a story.

Also, who in the hell is the narrator? I remember wondering that the first time I listened. She never directly interacts with the other characters.

Glad to read Yong point out how fallible scientific studies and our understanding of other species can be. I get frustrated with people stating that something we “know” about the natural world is the “truth” only to hear later that it isn’t. Let’s be humble and speak of our understanding and not of our knowledge.
