I had high hopes for this one, but alas, it was not meant to be. So far, the main character is a meek little thing who lets someone who is supposedly her "nemesis" steal her dead mother's watch without blinking an eye...She's just as much of a pushover as Melinda from Speak, which is REALLY disappointing because it draws into questioning the author's abilities to breathe authenticity and uniqueness into her books.

"I won't say I never thought about Valerie, but the war effort had to come first."

At this point, the dynamic has changed and it appears that the main character's feelings of isolation and loneliness are central to the themes of loyalty and belonging.

Right now there's a lot of boring melodrama from the navel-gazing protagonist who has been moping over her friendless status for the past thirty pages. Hopefully the plot picks up very soon.

"I have the choice of being constantly active and happy or introspectively passive and sad. Or I can go mad by ricocheting in between."

EXTREMELY slow start. Devoid of a strong hook.

It's like watching Paris from an express caboose heading in the opposite direction--every second the city gets smaller and smaller, only you feel it's really you getting smaller and smaller, and lonelier and lonelier, rushing away from all those lights and that excitement at about a million miles an hour.

"What she wanted to say was, it isn't disgusting. It's part of Nature. It's a way of giving life, pure life. It's secret and beautiful. It's all right."

Interesting start. Quite like L.J Smith's many other similar tales . . . . not sure if there's going to be repetition, but willing to give it a try because of her exemplary 'Forbidden Game' series.

Almost done with this sloppily written book. Good riddance.

Extremely slow; devoid of plot

Book is looking up since the lead character of the male persuasion has threatened to rape our protagonist while simultaneously choking her. *rolls eyes sarcastically* Oh, yeah, who needs the Prince in Shining Armor when a girl can get the gangbanging criminal from the Compton ghetto?

"Spend exciting first day back in London unpacking complimentary soaps, shower caps, emery boards, shoe polish, shampoos, conditioners, bath oils, tea bags, coffee, sugar, and cheese and biscuits purloined from my room in Cork. That's what I like about staying in hotels--I don't have to go grocery shopping for at least a week afterwards."

So outrageously monotonous that I have taken to reading other more stimulating novels simultaneously in the hopes of summoning up the false sense of satisfaction I will need to finish this trying book.

Sigh. And the clichés just keep pouring in.

Feeling conflicted... I want to like it, but the story lines are really falling flat.

This genre is so plentiful that if a new writer comes out with a paranormal book, it's considered bad until I consider it good. So far, the action is lacking and the every chapter seems to be mirror images of the one before it. We'll just have to see how it goes from here.

"He sat there with his hands over his face for a half hour before he dared to drive. He wanted to run back to Abby, but not to comfort her. He wanted the comfort for himself... holding him together, so he wouldn't fly apart into space."

"Back in her crazy period, she would've given that guy her number without hesitation. And waited breathless by the phone until he called.

Oh, get real. Probably she wouldn't have let him leave at all."

"I wanted him to kiss me with every ounce of my being. There was nothing in life I wanted more than that kiss. I could practically taste his lips.

'Do you want to?' he asked, voice still like velvet. 'Do you want to kiss me?'

Did I ever. Everything around me had blurred. Only his lips were in focus."

All my life, in considering my future career as a guardian, I'd looked forward to the marks. I'd seen them as badges of honor. But now? Mainly they were going to be reminders of something I wanted to forget.
