Shabos-Nakhamu whoa

Doudou was a pretty short story I wasn’t expecting from Babel.

Shabos story: “[she] had only ten fingers, but she had many more curses.” made me laugh.

Listened to this book as an audiobook. If I were to re-read (as it has a lot of great history), I would want the physical copy to really capture it better. Audiobook is great, but there’s a whole cast of characters here that it would be better to physically read names.

Good and dense historical writing. He does a great job of explaining Middle Eastern history and the intricacies between various perspectives, while also tying through history that happened in Europe at the same time that the average reader would be more likely to have learned in school. For example, he ties the explanation of limited immigration to Palestine by the British to the Evian Conference and Kristallnacht.

Mark Freurstein has a chapter. All are good so far, but not totally my demographic.

So far a really interesting explanation of 1920s-1930s Israel/Palestine history as told through the stories of major characters representing the Jews, the British, and the Palestinian Arabs, and how they interacted with the Ottoman Empire and national aspirations of two people. Dense, but also very readable. Listening on audiobook, but something I can see myself going back to as a quick reference. Great book so far.

The grandmother short story was relatable and interesting
