“Put all that together from not learning my history at school and learning a little at home, I feel fraudulent as I didn’t know my roots. I didn’t know where to start. We need a blueprint as individuals and as a people. We live in a puzzle where the pieces don’t even fit together. We need a path so we can put it all together again”

African American history, but I feel similar with Jews today too

“Your plate is your flag”

Pretty way to describe a minority’s culture and how you can celebrate it. He ties it to his Southern identity and the southern cooking, but he says “you need a homeland” to cook from and about. Just interesting way to put it.

Listening to this story finally through Libby. Southern culture and food. Interesting to hear more of this history and experience of an African American in the South.

We audiobook played chapter 4 and followed along. Great to hear the songs at the end of chapters sung. First 3 chapters we (Hunter, really) physically read.

Nice simple interviews guiding through light city history. Feels like a coffee table book and a starting point / tiny piece of an area’s story. Enjoying it overall.

Really interesting story about the KGB, Soviet Jewish soldiers and their lives after the war (and secrets kept)!

Listening on Audiobook and think it may have been better to read it because each chapter jumps in time, but I’m really enjoying it. Interesting story about a Jewish family in the 1960s and how the dad fought in WW2 and was a POW. Makes me want to dig into great grandparents history more again.

Talking about learning at Oxford. Sartre saying diligence will help him learn to write. Professor saying “reading until you understand this: we can only become ourselves by renouncing ourselves. We can only act independently when we give ourselves to the divine.”

Finding interesting as motivation to write more too.
