“The way my mother explained it, the traditional man wants a woman to be subservient, but he never falls in love with subservient women. He’s attracted to independent women. He’s like an exotic bird collector…He only wants a woman who is free because his dream is to put her in a cage.”

“…a knowledgeable man is a free man, or at least a man who longs for freedom.”

So simple, yet SO powerful.

“What I think did the most damage to me was watching all the people coming and going while I was prevented from leaving”

WOW.

My only real criticism of this book right now is that most chapters end with a blank page on both sides
Maybe it’s the environmentalist in me but I’m not a fan of that.
I understand the literary device of it but there are plenty of chapters that don’t need that dramatic pause of the double sided blank pages, that’s all I’m gonna say …

“She leaned in like she had a secret to tell me ‘Listen…I’m order to be creative, you have to have room for play in your schedule. It helps ground you to have that time to yourself. Hell, to just stare at the wall if you want. People need that’”.

“It was always incredible to me that so many people felt so comfortable talking about my body.. Whether it was strangers in the media or within my own family, people seemed to experience my body as public property: something they could police, control, criticize, or use as a weapon. My body was strong enough to carry two children and agile enough to execute every choreographed move perfectly onstage.“

I have so many questions while reading this book
It makes me want to hit up my high school English teachers to have them explain and answer these questions
