I started reading this last night and during the scene when the sun is setting and Ossian Sweet is preparing to defend his house my palms were actually sweating and I felt real fear coursing through my body. If all history was written like this we wouldn't think it was boring. Kevin Boyle my king<3

Interesting point but I feel like I'm reading the same sentence over and over again. Everything she's said in the first 3 chapters could have been summed up in a paragraph or less

Look who’s starting books willy-nilly again instead of sticking to her priority to-read list!

Very science-y and factual as opposed to argumentative, which is what I’m used to lol. Still enjoying tho!

Joan Didion what do you mean you’d let your child bike down a hill that led to a four way intersection for the sake of fostering independence. What do you mean you patrolled the areas near psych wards as a young army brat and took notes on what you overheard from mentally ill patients. What do you mean you drove from Sacramento to Lake Tahoe in one evening after getting your learner’s permit. What the fuck

This book is so disturbing and exhausting to read bc of all the hatred that Dower depicts. I'm still really enjoying it, though, because of how interesting it is; I've never thought about WWII in the Pacific Theater as a race war but it makes total sense. Dower is such a good historian and strings his argument together so nicely with such comprehensive evidence it makes me giddy

Reading this for my US history class. So interesting and terrifying. Really excellent research and gripping prose by von Drehle although he does sometimes launch into pages-long asides that provide a little too much background info.
