The way women are treated and portrayed in this book… it is gratuitous. Maybe it’s just me, but I feel like this is beyond the realm of “of its time” (written in the 80s); though I don’t know enough about the historical accuracy of the portrayal of women in the late 19th century, I really don’t like on page rape, regardless of historical accuracy.
