RIP Cathy, you would’ve loved Mastermind by taylor swift. Also I hate how much I relate to Cathy, especially at 16. The way she takes a problem and makes it a much bigger problem really resonates with me. Like no girl, you’re not crazy for marrying the man you don’t wanna marry so that you can cheat on him with the man you actually wanna marry, that sounds like a win-win-win to me.

A lesser writer could not pull this off, because at points, Bronte is telling us a story about Lockwood telling us a story about Nelly telling him a story about Heathcliff/Cathy telling her a story, and the only reason this works is because every single one of these people are hilarious povs. Very few books pull that off. RIP Bronte, I feel like you would’ve loved reality tv.

Also, I see why people were so upset with the recent remake. I really don’t see how you tell this love story with two white actors 😭

Classics tend to be pretty hit or miss for me, given I’m not particularly skilled at decoding old English, and also they (usually) move pretty slow. That said, even though I don’t know like every fourth word, this is some good kush. Brontë has me on the edge of my seat. I always kinda hate when the narrator is learning/telling someone else’s story (like Nick in Gatsby) but it works here!

the mixed reviews + shock value of this books title/plot fascinated and scared me. I have to say, 30 something pages in, and I’m locked in. It’s 300 pages so there’s plenty of time to lose me. But so far, the writing has been shockingly high quality, brimming with witty descriptions and social commentary about the romanization of serial killers through a capitalist lens that is really fascinating.

On one hand, this book needed a better editor. I caught a typo, and also she jumps around in time a lot and very little fluff is cut. On the other hand, I’m kind of glad this book was cut down. While stylistically it’d be better served, as a historic document I’m glad we have 400+ pages unfiltered. And in terms of fluff, I mean, the fact that her ‘fluff’ is detailing random massive achievements is badass.

I think that might be the best damn preface I’ve ever read.

Okay bitch. What happened before. You keep alluding to the mysterious “before I ruined her life.” I wanna know. I stg this question better be answered sooner than later given that every other paragraph you allude to ruining her life. Either tell me what happened by the midpoint or chill on the callbacks because I’m gonna go clinically insane and end up googling it. And it better be good. Love you tho lol

I’m preparing myself for what I know to be a slow read. I’ve tried this book before, but gave up because of the slow pace. Still, I find myself putting it at the top of my to-read list time and time again bc everything it has my name written all over it. The motifs, characters, and plot are just too on the nose. Hopefully people are right and it picks up in the second half!

So good and so painful to read.
