Diane, 8:47 pm, June 15. I am on page 6 of your book and have already marked four of your claims as fanciful and deserving of further research. why do you have a "further reading" section at the back of your book and not a "books I actually read that are reliable source of information" section. was it because you did not ready any? Diane?

rereading with better critical thinking skills. my last experience with Diane Ackerman was that she just *says* things sometimes. I'm on page 2 of the intro and she asserts that Masai women use excrement in their hair and would find peppermint as a breath freshener bizarre. the hair thing seems like an easy fact to confirm but she's the only one saying it. is she thinking of.. clay? DIANE??

2nd reading - I've defended this book a lot over the years but I haven't read it in a long time.. time to see if I agree with myself.

The first audiobook version I listened to was read by Donada Peters and I hated what her voice did to my favorite book. This time I'm listening to one narrated by Sarita Choudhury.

I'm finding the vocabulary in this book very strange. Some unusual terms are casually thrown into otherwise typical language, and then the same person will say "doggo". I am skeptical.

“By then he had concluded that socialism had not failed. He himself had failed, intellectually, by misjudging badly, for ten years, its champions here on earth. If the allegiance that his thinking produced was worthless, he had wasted his life.” 💯

"As far as I can recall, none of the adults in my life ever remembered to say, 'Some people have a thick skin and you don't. Your heart is really open and that is going to cause pain, but that is an appropriate response to this world. The cost is high, but the blessing of being compassionate is beyond your wildest dreams. However, you're not going to feel that a lot in seventh grade. Just hang on.'" omg

This quote doesn't originate in this book but it was very much a holy shit moment for me: 'What you promise when you are confirmed is not that you will believe this forever. What you promise when you are confirmed is that this is the story you will wrestle with forever.' SHIT I wish my parents had said that to me.
