Is this on your Want to Read list? Don't wait, read it now! If this is not on your Want to Read list, put it there! I picked this up after readmg Go Tell It On the Mountain. The contents is very intense, and the writing sublime. I was afraid to pick up the first book, a novel. They are both emotionally hard to read and hard to put down

Barbara is finished with Joseph and His Brothers
Beautifully elaborated version of the stories of Genesis.
Who knew that Joseph was a narcissist and a tattle-tale?
Interspersed is the story of Abraham, the averted sacrifice. I especially liked the sections after Joseph was sold into slavery in Egypt. It's a sensitive rendering of his maturing and becoming a competent adult, aware of the feelings of other people. I got tired, but slogged through the last bits.

Heartbreaking accounts of the slaughter of American Indian women and children. I am the daughter of a Holocaust survivor. If that wasn't genocide, what is?
The equally murderous treatment of black slaves and freedme.
I can't read more than a few pages at a time without profound grief or nausea.
Why read it? It's our history, if they had to live it, the least we can do is read about it

I love thus book so much!
It's my second attempt reading it. The first time I didn't have the time to devote to it.
I love that the stories from Genesis are so well known (in my neck of the woods) that I can focus on the beautiful writing and translation.
This is a treat I bought for myself, meal and dessert all in one

Yuch
Too dated for the 21st cent
Thank goodness it was his first, as he went on to become one of my favorite authors
