so many Irish authors loooove not using quotation marks... we get it, James Joyce was cool. anyways within the first five pages of the book I have identified a pretty simple solution to Cass' problems, which is "stand up for yourself," but I'm sure it'll take 600 pages for Cass to come to that conclusion.

This story is interesting, but every character is fundamentally unlikeable. Serk is a horrible man with a superiority complex- he doesn't notice his wife becomming paralyzed. Louisa stays a cruel, petulant brat in her 30s, and makes such idiotic choices. Anne's just passive, she's a punching bag for Serk and Louisa. The author wants you to feel bad for her but I don't understand why Anne lives her life so passively.

these characters are not compelling at all. They just whine about problems they created for themselves ew
