The old school fantasy tropes and pragmatic writing style does not bother me in the least, this book is so precious and refreshingly wholesome.

My excuse for continuing to read/read about Schopenhauer even though he’s super lame is that I’m trying to better understand Nietzsche

Tom Holland is a fantastic writer, but his recounting of events between 140 BC to Sulla’s dictatorship leaves something to be desired. For one, he omits—what I deem to be—crucial systemic and contextual details in favor of writing with narrative flourish. For two, there is an inherent anti-Marian, almost pro-Sullan skew to his writing? He has somehow even managed to downplay Sulla’s proscriptions.

So far this just feels EXACTLY like Blood Song and The Name of the Wind.

19th century western philosophers try not to be racist challenge: impossible

The first two chapters so far is mostly a lot of military historiography as well as Keegan’s appeal to the reader’s ethos despite his lack of personal experience as a military combatant. Interesting but I’m eager to get deeper into some examples.
