Tom Holland is a fantastic writer, but his recounting of events between 140 BC to Sulla’s dictatorship leaves something to be desired. For one, he omits—what I deem to be—crucial systemic and contextual details in favor of writing with narrative flourish. For two, there is an inherent anti-Marian, almost pro-Sullan skew to his writing? He has somehow even managed to downplay Sulla’s proscriptions.
