I don’t even care how tropey this book is. I’m loving it. Definitely not on the level as stormlight, but a nice fresh fantasy book (though my rating will include some concerns I found while reading (as a writer).

Also, it pisses me off that Halden - Aaric’s brother and violet’s first love - is just randomly injected into the plot for the purpose of creating a jealous emotion in Xaden. I know he’s royalty, but holy shit. This dude just randomly appeared and Violet is like “oh my god I can’t believe he’s back in my life. The first love of my life” BITCH, HE WAS BARELY MENTIONED IN BOOK 2 AND YOY SAID NOTHING

Like seriously how am I 400+ pages in and all we’ve done so far is unlock a book and fly to an island? What the fuck. This book’s plot is so painstakingly slow with useless filler
