Definitely not as good as the Scarth book, but I’m glad I read it because it did have a lot of additional stuff. The Scarth book was super focused. This book offered more granularity about personalities, and the “adventures“ of some outsiders who came after May 8 to look at the devastation and the volcano. I was in a better position to appreciate that because I read the other book first.

Weird little fictionalized scene with the meeting of the scientific commission: there have been other little creative embellishment bits like this, but this one sticks out more because of all the invented dialogue.

One thing that I like about this book is that it has given some actual real estate to the volcano that went off in St. Vincent a day before Mount Pelee really blew its top. A full chapter, “La Soufriere.”

Scarth (and Ozymandias, the reviewer who recommended his book) may have ruined me for Zebrowski. Still, I shall continue.

Eh, it got better as it went along. I kind of wish she just rewritten the opening for its publication in book format, though: the lead in could’ve been stronger.

I kind of like how it looks like he’s punching this kid in the one panel.

Gotta say, so far I’m finding this pretty vapid. Moments of cute. Lovely color palette. I think this must’ve originally been a Web comic, because it’s kind of hard for me to make out the finer details, and I think it’s been printed in dimensions just a bit too small. (Then again, I’m in my 40s and my eyes are going.)

LOL re: p. 396: “why are you all sick?” And I just told Kristen this has inadvertently triggered my recognition of a sub genre that I kind of love: narratives about the discovery of diseases/medical conditions and the causes/cures thereof. Most of these narratives being nonfiction, But In this case, an entire fictitious alien race of people that don’t actually realize they are sick.

… I wish I could remember who Seper was.
