I LOVE how the author takes the time to spatialize the Donnor party in time. I viewed their travels as so abstract and medieval. I didn’t realize it was when New York was bustling with restaurants, telegrams were being sent via Morse code, and steam trains were chugging around the country.

The pacing of the narrator is so weird. He pauses halfway through a sentence then continues again as if he’s starting a new one

Good but the narrator is odd. His pacing is off and doesn’t make sense at times

I get the author has trauma with her dad, but claiming her cat was raped when in reality her family was breeding her to sell her kittens is very, very weird.

I hate how she describes the Vietnam war. It wasn’t some glorious battle - it was outright murder of the native people. She literally describes soldiers breaking into homes. So sad that modern opinion still hasn’t changed about Vietnam.

This book is so good. The writing is remarkable. I love the intertwining of geography.

To forget a holocaust is to kill twice.

The author recognizes other massacres so thoughtfully and doesn’t try to minimize any other to make this more dramatic. Just pure fact
