What does it say about me that even in the face of a town knowingly accepting an old god periodically abducting their children…the one I’m most irritated with is the priest meddling in the funeral rights and trying to shove Jesus at them???

So this is deeply disturbing and fucked up in the incredible way that only happens in truly good folk horror. The body horror/graphic gore is already a million time more intense than any of Homie’s other books though and I’m only on chapter 8 of 45.

We love when a uk release date means the audiobook is out in the US 6 months before the US release date.

As a child this would have felt so serious and perilous. As an adult Im charmed by how campy it is. It’s making me nostalgic for being a little nine year old kid discovering epic/high fantasy.

Started reading this series because Tamsyn Muir loosely based Mathias Nonias off of this series and I was curious. I have had mouse Matthias, with his robes and his too big sandals for two chapters and already I feel deeply protective of this guy. This is my little guy.

I let myself think this would be dinosaur adventure stories and that’s my bad. Cus of course dinosaurs are actually just the vehicle for metaphors about the sanctity of childhood wonder. This is Ray we are talking about. (Other than A Sound of Thunder) Still incredible though.

Gotta love a character whose superiors refer to her as “combative, defiant, and unduly pedantic.” Neema Kraa, you are my hero.

“After that we were passing through the Paleolithic. 5,000 gates built, only 300 requiring meat on deck. And we’d barely finished our first circuit of the Milky Way…I gave up after Australopithecus.”

I had to pause this audio book at a minute in so I could laugh and take a breath. Whoever this character is, I love them. The narration is great too.

The oscillation between third person limited to an omniscient first person (we) is so masterfully done. I love a puzzle and a locked room mystery and incredibly complicated character dynamics.

Okay, I was stubborn for no reason. So far there is no trite vampire romance drama and just a lot of old faces making appearances. Which is super nice.

I’m really not a Vampire girl. I don’t find them sexy and I think most newish takes on them are mostly cheese. But this is the last book I haven’t read in the sourdough universe and so it’s time to embrace the leech lords. It’s admittedly really compelling so far.

First, the concept of a “summer husband” is supremely weird and yucky but fun. As far as atmosphere, this book is ticking every single one of my boxes. It’s also trying to do a lot. We have implied Changelings and Green Men lore and mentions of The Wild Hunt and it all works so far. But I fear it’s about to become too much to juggle narratively speaking. I hope I’m incorrect.

Baby’s first bodice ripper. It’s all empty calories, but it’s charming and vapid in a fun way. It’s especially nice when it isn’t using a lazy/half plotted magic system as a vehicle for the horniness. It’s just horny for the sake of horny and I respect that.

Plot is predictable but the atmosphere is fun and so is the love story tangled up in blasphemy/corrupted evil religions. Loss of faith is sexy and I stand by that

If I had a nickel for every time the protagonist was a princeling in exile but still caught up in life or death politics while using an alias and also trying to pass off his giant wolf as if it were a pet dog…I’d have two nickels??? Vis is Fitz if Fitz wasn’t a depressed himbo with a stimulant problem.
